Why basements need a different approach
A garage floor and a basement floor look similar once they're coated, but the concrete underneath behaves differently. Calgary's clay-heavy soil and high water table mean below-grade slabs can carry moisture that isn't visible to the eye — coat over that without checking, and even a well-applied epoxy can blister or delaminate months later. Every basement job starts with a moisture test, not just a sweep and a coat.
Once the slab checks out, the process is similar to a garage: grind or prep the surface, base coat, flake or solid colour broadcast if you want one, and a sealed top coat. The result is a floor that's easier to clean, doesn't shed concrete dust, and holds up to a finished or semi-finished space.

Unfinished basement? Still worth it
A lot of Calgary basements sit unfinished for years with bare concrete underfoot — cold, dusty, and hard to use for anything but storage. Sealing that slab now, even before you finish the rest of the space, keeps concrete dust down and gives you a clean, usable floor in the meantime. It's one of the more overlooked upgrades for a basement that's "someday" going to be finished.

Does my basement need a moisture test? +
Yes. Calgary's clay-heavy soil and high water table mean basement slabs often carry more moisture than they look like they do. I test before quoting, since a coating applied over a damp slab can fail regardless of installation quality.
Do I need a permit? +
Usually not for a floor coating alone, but larger below-grade renovation jobs may need a City of Calgary permit depending on scope — I'll flag that during the assessment.
Can you coat an unfinished basement? +
